A is for Anarchy

A is for Anarchy  and Activism

What does anarchy have to do with craft?  You’ll find out more when we get to Y = Yarn Bombing, but for now my ire is up about corporate takeovers of small business and I’m going to become a yarn bomber in protest.( and also just because yarn bombing sounds fun)

It’s bad enough Walmart and the other Big box stores drive many local shops out of  business (for more on that read “Big-box Swindle” by Stacy Mitchell).  You’ll never shop at Walmart again or if you do you’ll feel real guilty.  Now hospitals corporations are doing the same thing to local MD’s offices.

I’m a nurse and have worked for over 20 years in doctor’s offices.  If your toilet overflowed and you needed to take morning off for the plumber you could talk to your boss and work it out to make the time up later during the week.  If your child got sick you could leave early to get them and your boss would say “Hope she feels better”.

Now our office has been bought by one of the local hospitals and suddenly we work under corporation rules.  Any calling out and/or leaving early is an incident!  And too many incidents can lead to being let go!!  And maybe your boss understands but he’s no longer in charge, the hospital corporation is and they make the rules.

What the Big Box stores did to local business, the hospital corporations are now doing to doctor’s offices.  It’s almost impossible for an independent doctor to remain in business once a hospital corporation moves in and starts taking over all the labs, xray facilities and other doctor’s offices in the area.  It’s either join up or go under.

That’s my rant.

And I promise the rest of the A-Z challenge will be about crafts and crafting.

Until we get to Y.  By then I’ll have made some yarn bombs and placed them and I’ll share photos and patterns of my work.

Thanks for stopping by.  :)

  1. Yarn bombing sounds like so much fun. I've always wanted to try it... might need to look for a group in my area...

  2. Happened to us here as well, we got bought by a big american company and they try to pass down their rules onto us, luckily when we got "taken over" we had it in the contract that our Irish handbook still applies for us.

And yea yarn bombing I love that!

    1. You were lucky. We were told nothing would change, Ha! since the new year began they've been making changes almost everyday.

  3. One of my biggest pet peeves with the world of work is being treated like a naughty child from the word "go" - you can't do this, you must do this. It's all very well to have rules, but the tenor of them is usually so horribly patronising and overbearing.

    1. Exactly! I think that's what I despise about it the most; the treating everybody as it they are naughty children even if they been a good employee for years.

  4. I think Anarchy is an appropriate topic, even for crafting. TFS! I can't wait to see your other topics--I still don't have one for Z lol

  5. Hi there! I'm here for the A to Z challenge. I read the B entry, then thought I'd take a look at your A, and I found it much more intriguing! What you describe is also happening to public (American public = locally government funded) schools. I read enough liberal blogs to read about this happening in the BigBoxification of American work everywhere, what is also new is not having a clear schedule so you never know which hours your are working and are expected to be on call for every possible one of them, maybe you get 15 hours to work maybe 75. It's a system designed to grind the workers into compliant jelly.

Anyway, I blog about real estate not crafts, but thought I'd pop in on Anarchy to sympathize!

  6. Oh my god that's awful!! :( That sucks. Evil corporations. They just don't care at all about people. I shop at Walmart by necessity b/c I'm too poor to shop anywhere else for stuff and I hate it.

    Love the idea of yarnbombing!

  9. Also! The crappy thing about Walmart is that they do drive out local businesses but it's also because they make their goods cheaper for the consumer, which for people that are poor or struggling in the economy, sometimes they HAVE to shop there. And Walmart knows that. So it's not always as simple as not shopping there because sometimes people can't afford not to. :/
